For English-language schools: how does this tool help?
Use balanced thermochemical equations with matching states and compatible reference conditions; reversing an equation reverses its enthalpy change. Combine two equations using Hess’s law: Enter two balanced equations and their enthalpy changes, then multipliers; negative multipliers reverse equations and decimals such as 0.5 are allowed. These educational calculators use explicitly bounded models. Each mode shows the rule, substitution, checks and limits. Atomic weights and physical constants are stated when used; chemical symbols and SI units are universal across study languages.
- Choose Arabic or English study language.
- Select a calculation goal and read the explanation beneath it.
- Enter data in the displayed units; load the example to see the input format.
- Calculate, then review the rule, substitution, checks and model conditions rather than copying the answer alone.
What can you calculate with this tool?
- Combine two equations using Hess’s lawEnter two balanced equations and their enthalpy changes, then multipliers; negative multipliers reverse equations and decimals such as 0.5 are allowed.
A worked example: Combine two equations using Hess’s law
Given values
- First thermochemical equation: C(s) + O2(g) -> CO2(g)
- First equation enthalpy change: -393.5 kJ
- First equation multiplier: 1
- Second thermochemical equation: 2CO(g) + O2(g) -> 2CO2(g)
- Second equation enthalpy change: -566 kJ
- Second equation multiplier: -0.5
The rule
- Enthalpy is a state function. Add the enthalpy changes after applying the same multipliers as for the balanced equations.\[\Delta H_{overall}=f_1\Delta H_1+f_2\Delta H_2\]
Worked solution
- Equation 1: multiply the equation and enthalpy by the same factor.\[1\times-393.5=-393.5\;\mathrm{kJ}\]
- Equation 2: reverse direction and enthalpy sign, then scale by the multiplier magnitude.\[-0.5\times-566=283\;\mathrm{kJ}\]
- Cancel species only when both formula and state match, then add the scaled enthalpy changes.\[-393.5+283=-110.5\]
Check the result
- Each input equation is atom-balanced. Different states do not cancel: H2O(l) is not H2O(g).
Enthalpy values must use compatible reference conditions. The result applies to the written equation; it is not automatically normalized per mole.
The rule we use — English-language schools
Enthalpy is a state function. Add the enthalpy changes after applying the same multipliers as for the balanced equations.
